SEAPEAT policy brief

Recommendations for evidence-based peatland management across scales and borders: quantifying uncertainty, increasing the transparency of scientific data, and building in community input. It argues for carbon accounting approaches that engage constructively with uncertainty, and for valuing the broader sustainability benefits of peatlands in decision-making.

Mitigating carbon emissions and haze in Southeast Asia’s peatlands: opportunities and challenges in integrating policy and governance

Helena Varkkey, Matthew Ashfold, Gusti Z. Anshari, Alex M. Lechner, Sharon Seah, Nurisa Wijayanti, Fatima Tuzzahara Alkaf and Siti Asdiah Masran

Traces how peatland policy in Indonesia and Malaysia evolved from conservation towards fire and haze, and finds that recent government-reported peatland emissions appear lower than academic studies suggest. Identifies unrealised opportunities to integrate carbon emissions reduction with fire and haze management through nature-based solutions.
